The capital of Spain is Madrid. This city is the largest in all of Spain and is located roughly in the middle of the country, near the Tagus river.
In Spanish, the leader of Spain is called the Presidente del Gobierno. This translates into the
president of the government, but in English we call him (or her) the prime minister. Currently, Mariano Rajoy is the Spanish Presidente del Gobierno.
Spanish currency consists of euros and pesetas. In Spanish, their flag is called Bandera de España, or, in less formal language, la Rojigualda.
Popular Spanish dishes often consist of rice, such as Arroz a la cubans. Pies and cakes are common desserts.
The natural attractions in Spain include many of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. La Concha in San Sebastian is extremely popular among tourists.
Spain is also visited because of it's breath-taking mountain views, such as Monte Perdido. Located in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park in Aragón, Monte Perdido is 3,355 meters tall. The park is also known for it's lush forests and tumbling waterfalls.
Hidden away in the Iberian System mountain ranges is the Monasterio de Piedra. Founded in 1194 by Alfonso II of Argon, the monastery is located the Piedra river and the city of Nuévalos. Now it is also a hotel and a national monument.
Cultural attractions in Spain include the "hanging houses" of Cuena. Situated between Madrid and Valencia, this town is a perfect example of a medieval city, with the added attraction of being built on a mountainside.
Alhambra, constructed in the 1500s by Nasrid sultans, is part fortress and part castle. This stunning piece of history is one of the biggest tourist draws in the entire country. From the plateau it was built on, one can see all of Granada, a city in Southern Spain.
The Palacio Real is the official residence for the Spanish king, though today it is only used for state ceremonies. It took 17 years to complete. King Carlos III (also called King Charles III, depending on the translation) was the first occupant. He moved in to the palace in 1764.
Spain is world-renowned for it's incredible bridges and buildings and the breath-taking natural scenery. Many people flock to this part of Europe every year to enjoy the food, the bull runs, and to go sight-seeing.
